Knowing how hard it has been for me to develop the habit of meeting with God daily, I want to do whatever I can to make it easier for my children to seek Him regularly.
When my kids were younger, I was inspired by the movie “War Room” to create a quiet time space for them in their closets. It wasn’t anything fancy, but it was a dedicated place for them to spend time with the Lord. The space encouraged them to read their Bibles or devotionals, write on their journals, and/or pray.
I remember a particular day in which my son decided to go to his “war room” because he was having a difficult day. When he came out a few minutes later, he shared how the Lord had spoken to him about his particular situation through the devotional scheduled for that day. It was heartwarming to see the change in his countenance after God encouraged him in a way that only He can.
Here’s what I used to create my kids’ spaces:
- Display shelf from Ikea
- Magnetic board also from Ikea
- Magnets
- Index cards
- Pens and pencils
- Tin little bucket from the dollar section at Target for their pens and pencils
- Big pillow (I think I got mine at Marshalls)
- Journal
- Bible
- Devotional
That was it. You could also add a string of lights, a blanket, a perpetual calendar with scripture, and so many other fun things!
Here’s a list of some of my favorite devotionals and Bibles for children:
- The Action Bible
- The Action Bible Study Bible ESV
- The Jesus Story Book Bible
- Grace for the Moment by Max Lucado
- Thoughts to Make Your Heart Sing Zonderkidz
- His Mighty Warrior by Sheri Rose Shepherd
- God’s Mighty Warrior Devotional by Sheila Walsh
- A little girl after God’s own heart by Elizabeth George
- Brave Girls Bible Stories Tommy Nelson
- For Such a Time as This by Angie Smith
- God’s Names by Sally Michael
I will say, however, that your example will be more important in drawing your children closer to God than creating the perfect space for them. If they see you seeking God, reading your Bible, praying, and if they experience the fruit of the Spirit in your life, they will be more likely to want what you have: a relationship with God. Creating a space that will invite them to seek Him, is just a bonus!
Your turn!

- Do you have a space for yourself or for your children to spend time with the Lord?
